Checklist For Day Before Surgery

  • Drink eight to ten glasses of water throughout the day.

  • Buy some chicken soup, crackers, sodas, and Jell-O to have on hand the first day of surgery.

  • Eat a light dinner the night before surgery. Avoid spicy and greasy foods.

  • Avoid alcoholic beverages the evening and night before surgery. Alcohol is known to decrease stomach emptying leading to post operative vomiting.

  • Please refrain or reduce cigarette smoking 12 hours before surgery. Smoking increases stomach secretions that lead to nausea after surgery. Not smoking improves the oxygen supply in your blood.

  • Please make arrangement for an adult to bring you to the hospital and accompany you home. You will need an adult to stay with you when you arrive home for 12 - 24 hours depending on the type of anesthesia you have.

  • Please notify your doctor if you have a change in health such as a cold or fever.

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to your surgery. This includes water, hard candy, mints, cough drops, and gum, etc. These items increase stomach juices that can lead to vomiting during or after surgery.
