Risk Factors

Change Habits to Boost Heart Health

While we can’t control some risk factors for heart disease, we can reduce and eliminate many. Men may face a greater risk of heart disease, but men who choose a life free of smoking and with healthy levels of exercise tip the scales in their favor.

It’s proven. Healthy lifestyle choices reduce heart disease risk. Even better? Odds are if you reduce one risk — such as high cholesterol, inactivity or excess weight — that action will pay dividends in other areas of health such as lowering blood pressure or controlling diabetes.

Heart Disease Risk Quiz

Too young to worry? If you are a male age 45 or older or a female age 55 or older, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you have high cholesterol?
  • Do you smoke?
  • Do you have diabetes?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?
  • Do you have a family history of heart disease (father or brother diagnosed before age 55 or mother or sister diagnosed before age 65)?
  • Are you overweight?
  • Are you physically inactive?
