According to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the state, responsible for more than 2,000 fatalities each year. South Carolina is among a group of Southeastern states with high stroke death rates known as the “Stroke Belt.”
Certified by DNV Healthcare as a Primary Stroke Center, Lexington Medical Center offers comprehensive stroke care using protocols, orders and policies based on best practice. We are one of six hospitals in the state and the only Midland’s hospital to receive the Gold Plus award from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association Get With the Guidelines program, which recognizes commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients.
What is a Stroke?
Stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot receive the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die.
F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs and symptoms of a stroke. When you can spot the signs, you'll know quickly that you need to call 911 for help.
- Face — Look for an uneven smile.
- Arm — Check if one arm is weak.
- Speech — Speech Difficulty.
- Time — Call 911 right away.
Other Sudden Stroke Symptoms
- Numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
- Confusion or trouble understanding.
- Trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
- Severe headache with no known cause.

- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Lack of physical activity
- Excessive alcohol use
