Local Hearts, World-Class Expertise
A critical part of our complete heart care program is the ability to perform open heart surgery. During the intricate surgery, a cardiothoracic surgeon opens the chest to repair heart muscle, valves, arteries or other heart structures.
The Heart Center at Lexington Medical Center has been shaped by one of the nation’s premier heart care centers. Duke Medicine assists Lexington Medical Center, one of only six Southeast affiliates, with quality and development for all cardiovascular services as well as staffing. The affiliation also ensures that Lexington Medical Center patients have access to the latest advances in cardiovascular care.
If you're having planned heart surgery, your healthcare team will outline your surgery well ahead of time. They’ll meet with you to explain the process and answer any questions you have.
Everyone who has heart surgery has a different response. You’ll likely spend a few days in the ICU for careful monitoring and then transition to another area hospital to recover. You’ll have a detailed plan of ongoing care once you’re released.
