Specialized Services Set Us Apart

Autologous Transfusion Service

Begun in 1989, this continues to be the only in-hospital program in the Midlands and one of the few in South Carolina. This service allows the patient to donate their own blood for planned future use.

Transfusion Alternatives

In hopes of avoiding the need for a patient to receive anyone else’s blood, this program is supplemented with a cell-saver program and intra-operative hemodilution as transfusion alternatives.

Hemochromatosis Service

Patients diagnosed with iron-overload disorders benefit from our coordinated phlebotimization program, actively treating patients since 1996.

Unusual Tests

Since 1971 we have maintained relationships with specialty laboratories all over the USA so that quality testing for unusual tests is rapidly available by overnight air transport.

LML Provides Most Testing

Lexington Medical Laboratories (LML), locally owned, provides a high percentage of our specialty testing.

STAT Tests Give Fast Referrals

Because referrals must be quickly made for angioplasty or open-heart surgery from such a busy ER, we have continually been first in the Midlands for availability of leading-edge STAT tests 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The importance of this rapid turnaround is realized when potentially dangerous "clot buster" drugs are given only to those who need it.

New Tests

Independently owned, LML has been able to implement new tests (such as free PSA, PCR, fetal fibrinectin) far ahead of the usual pace, often transferring the new expertise into the LMC lab.

DIF Skin Biopsy Studies

The only Midlands lab (LML) and one of the few in S.C. able to do these special skin studies, performed as emergency tests for patients with awful blistering, emergency skin conditions so that a correct choice can be made to use or not to use certain powerful medications.

Best DIF/IF Autoimmune Testing in S.C.

Our lab offers an unexcelled level of expertise in S.C. for testing for such diseases as lupus at LML.

Cancer Research

In July 2007, we became active contributors of research tissue from surgically removed tumors to the South Carolina Biorepository System for cancer research here in the Midlands.

Access and Efficiency

85 percent of Tests Completed Daily

To avoid the constraint of the limitations of a typical work day’s three shifts, our lab became the first in the Southeast to break this paradigm and maintain a goal of 85 percent of a day’s tests completed and reported by 8:00 am.

24-Hour Emergency Services

LMC was the first hospital in South Carolina to have its own full-time staff of ER doctors. With the second busiest ER in South Carolina, our lab continues to emphasize rapid, accurate, 24-hour-a-day centralized lab support for our ER, Operating Rooms and Intensive Care Unit.

Fast Diagnosis of Acute MI

Since 1980, our lab has emphasized rapid lab testing to make the diagnosis or rule out the diagnosis of acute MI.

Not-For-Profit - Offering Same-Day Services

With charges to LMC being set at or lower than those of giant, membership purchasing cooperatives available to LMC, this lab has operated essentially as a not-for-profit lab while offering same-day services and locally coordinated testing.
