Lexington Medical Center Wins Prestigious Award for Excellence in Patient Care
West Columbia, S.C. – For the second year in a row, Lexington Medical Center’s Inpatient Services Department has won the prestigious Summit Award from Press Ganey for sustaining excellence in quality of care and providing the best possible experience for patients and their families. In addition, Lexington Medical Center’s Outpatient Surgery Departments in Irmo and Lexington have won the Summit Award for the fourth year in a row.
Representatives from Lexington Medical Center traveled to Orlando, Florida to accept the awards at a ceremony there on November 9th, 2010.
The Summit Award is the most prestigious designation from Press Ganey, a well-known company in the health care industry that collects patient, employee and physician perspectives on hospitals. To qualify for the Summit Award, a hospital must rank in the 95th percentile or above for a minimum of three consecutive years.
Factors leading to Inpatient Services’ Summit Award included developing a program to promptly address patient concerns and complaints through frequent visits to patient rooms, creating an initiative to re-educate all staff members on patient sensitivity, implementing room service meals and improving methods of communication between bedside nurses, patients and family members. These initiatives led to consistently high patient satisfaction scores.
Press Ganey surveyed Inpatient Services departments at 992 hospitals across the country; only 31 won the Summit Award. That means Lexington Medical Center’s Inpatient Services ranks in the top 3% of hospitals surveyed. Press Ganey also surveyed 810 Outpatient Surgery departments in hospitals across the country; only 6 departments won the Summit Award. Two of them were from Lexington Medical Center.
“Patient satisfaction is a top priority at Lexington Medical Center; it’s part of our culture,” said Susan Horton, Director of Staff Development and Guest Services at the hospital. “The Summit Award is very prestigious. And to receive this honor for more than one year in a row is an excellent achievement of which we are very proud.”
Lexington Medical Center, in West Columbia, S.C., anchors a county-wide health care network that includes six community medical centers throughout Lexington County and employs a staff of 5,200 health care professionals.
