The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), a professional care provider, is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has graduated from one of more than thirty advanced education programs accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).
|
| In addition, CNMs must pass a national certification examination and meet strict requirements set by state health agencies.
CNMs attend women during labor and delivery and are trained and experienced in prenatal, postpartum, normal newborn care, and in routine gynecological care. Thus, as they carry on a centuries-old tradition of assisting women in the safe delivery of babies, they can draw not only on their professional skills but the use of advanced techniques in modern medicine.
An obstetrician is always available to the CNM for consultation, collaboration and/or referral.
