Bio

Originally from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Dr. Libbey graduated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine. He received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School in Chicago, Illinois in 1992. He completed his General Surgery residency there in 1998 and was the Chief Administrative Resident during his final year.

Dr. Libbey next completed a Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgical Fellowship in June of 1999 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. At Mayo, he was Director of the Laparoscopic Laboratory, which involved training residents, fellows and staff members in beginning and advanced laparoscopy. Less than one percent of general surgeons in the nation have this level of training in advanced laparoscopic surgery, establishing Dr. Libbey as an expert in this field.

As prior Chief of Surgery at Lexington Medical Center and author of many peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Libbey is a strong advocate for continuing education and excellence in health care support and services.

Board certified with the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Libbey has pioneered minimally invasive surgery in the Lexington area as the first to perform many surgeries laparoscopically, including nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, pancreatectomy, subtotal and total colectomy, Heller myotomy, gastrectomy, common bile duct exploration and ventral hernia repair. His leading-edge, state-of-the-art techniques have earned him recognition and many awards in the medical community.

Dr. Libbey is recognized as the first surgeon in the Midlands to perform single-incision laparoscopic and robotic surgeries for cholecystectomies and right hemi-colectomies.

He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, is a fellow with the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the Lexington Medical Association, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Systems, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the South Carolina Medical Association.
