One of the hospital’s most popular programs, pet therapy began at Lexington Medical Center in
2008. The hospital currently has eight pet therapy teams that visit patient areas several times a
week. All dogs must be certified through a nationally recognized pet therapy program and
complete a physical exam to participate in the program.
Health Benefits
Interacting with a pet offers many health benefits. Petting a dog has been shown to:
- Lower your blood pressure
- Improve your cardiovascular health
- Release endorphins that have a calming effect
- Lifts your spirits and lessen depression
- Decrease feelings of isolation and alienation
- Encourage communication
- Provide comfort
- Reduce boredom and decrease anxiety
The physical and psychological benefits of pet therapy are especially important for cancer
patients as they commonly experience high levels of stress and depression, particularly those
who have no family members with them. Pet therapy has been shown to reduce depression in
patients receiving chemotherapy.
